NOTE: Due to mandated restrictions against public meetings during the COVID 19 pandemic, this meeting was conducted via ZOOM video teleconferencing. We watched a pre-recorded message by Professor Andy McIntosh, DSc, FIMA, C.Math, FInstE, CEng, FInstP, MIGEM, FRAeS, titled, "THE EXTRAORDINARY BOMBARDIER BEETLE." (Click on the Youtube below to watch.) This meeting is to be followed on Friday, April 25, at 11:00 AM Pacific Time by a live interview with Professor McIntosh from his home in the UK. He will be sharing a few new slides, and answering questions from our ZOOM audience. About our Speaker: The initials above stand for: DSc - Doctor of Science ( a research degree above Ph.D.); FIMA - Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics; CMath - Chartered Mathematician; FEI - Fellow of the Energy Institure; CEng - Chartered Engineer; FInstP - Fellow of the Institute of Physics; MIGEM - Member of the Institute of Engineers and Managers; FRAeS - Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Professor Andrew Charles McIntosh is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Leeds, England, where he has lectured and researched in the field of Combustion and Explosions for over 20 years. His research has included investigations involving fluids (the interaction of pressure waves with flames) as well as solids. In the area of heterogeneous combustion he is interested in the safety of reactive substances, which can include traditional fuels such as coal, but also may include agrochemicals, some of which are now being used widely to increase crop yields, but in bulk can have unusual ignition properties. Unusual chemical behavior is also being studied in collaboration with industry, with a view to developing carbon capture reactors for energy generation. In the last few years Professor McIntosh has been involved in research in the area of biomimetics where the minute combusion chamber of the bombardier beetle has inspired a patented novel spray technology. This led to research first sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), followed by extensive funding from industry to apply the technology to fuel injectors, pharmaceutical sprays, aerosols, and fire extinguishers. Professor McIntosh is a trained mathematician and has worked in aerodynamics at Cranfield University and the Royal Aircraft Establishment (Bedford) before going to Leeds where he gained a DSc in 1998 and a personal chair in 2000. He became a Fellow of the Institute of Physics in 2002 and in 2003 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. He has over 180 publication in Journals and Conferences and has lectured widely internationally on these subjects and on the scientific question of origins on which the discipline of thermodynamics has a fundamental bearing. Professor McIntosh has also been named a Logos Research Associate. ![]() NOTE: Due to mandated restrictions against public meetings during the COVID 19 pandemic, this meeting was conducted via ZOOM video teleconferencing. Last year, he returned to the Ukraine for three intense weeks of teaching Creation Science Apologetics and Evangelism as part of the activities prompted by the proclamation of the President of the Ukraine recognizing the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's sparking the Reformation in Germany. ![]() Under government and church orders to cancel public gatherings, the Creation Science Fellowship of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa conducted its first ever meeting by teleconference, using ZOOM. Jim Pamplin B.A. (Biology), gave a PowerPoint slide show of his January trip to Wadi Ze'elim in Israel to serve as a field assistant to geologist, Dr. Steve Austin, a Logos Research Associate. Their objective was to study "seismites," physical records of ancient earthquakes locked in Dead Sea sediments, now exposed above sea level along the shores of the shrinking lake. About Jim Pamplin: Active in creation science circles, Jim has led the Creation Science Fellowship of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa since 2002. Befriended by a number of Bible-believing scientists, when several found themselves displaced from the research they loved, Jim introduced them to Pastor Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. After prayerful consideration and with encouragement from Pastor Chuck and the Calvary Chapel board, the group incorporated as Logos Research Associates. Jim now serves LogosRA as office administrator, (i.e., paper-shuffler/pencil-pusher/bean-counter) and as Secretary-treasurer to the Board of Directors. He and Sue, his bride of 50 years, are missionaries of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. ![]() David Phillipps gave a presentation, titled, "DESIGN REVISITED." Creationists and I.D. proponents have suggested for a very long time that there is evidence for design in nature . Evolutionists have reacted very negatively to such evidence and further argued that there are examples of what they say is poor design no creator would ever make. In more recent years a wealth of new books have come out refuting the notion of poor design or no design at all. Specific examples of design in nature were provided. About our speaker: David Phillipps has 6 degrees , all in science. He got a BA in Physical Anthropology ,with minors in Geology and Biology. He received a Master's degree in Paleoanthropology in 1991 with highest honors, from CSUN. He has completed many units towards a PH D in Vertebrate Paleontology. Mr. Phillipps has appeared on the Discovery Channel to defend the case for The Noachian Flood. He taught for 17 years at the Master's University, and for the past 14 years has taught at Pete Knight High School. ![]() Helmut Welke, an Ambassador of Logos Research Associates, gave a presentation on "Aliens, UFO's, and the Bible." UFO researchers evidently think there are, or have been, aliens who have visited planet Earth. A growing number of people believe life on earth was seeded by ancient aliens. And what about all those stories of abductions happening in recent years? This presentation reviewed the status of alien research and what we should really think about “alien visitors”. About our speaker: Helmut Welk is a recently retired engineering manager with a Fortune 200 company. He holds BS and MS degrees in industrial engineering from the University of Illinois and has held positions in a variety of national and international assignments. He is a certified engineering manager, and in 2006 was elected to the board of trustees of IIE – an international society serving the Industrial and Systems Engineering profession. In 2012 he was honored as a “Fellow” of the IIE society. Helmut is also president of the Quad-City Creation Science Association. Founded in 2008, they are dedicated to telling the truth in science education. He is a member of the Creation Research Society and is an Ambassador/Speaker for Logos Research Associates. In recent years Helmut has become a popular speaker on Creation Science topics as well as Atheism and Intelligent Design. He has spoken to churches, youth groups, on college campuses and to civic organizations throughout the Midwest USA, but also in France, Germany and Poland. ![]() My wife, Sue, and I offer our SINCERE APOLOGIES! One Saturday evening this past year, Tom Canfield, Creation Science Fellowship's videographer, called and asked me, (Jim Pamplin), if I was coming to that night's meeting. I had completely forgot! I was too far away, and I held the key to the auditorium. So we had to cancel the meeting - the first time in CSF's 17 year history! Much more recently, knowing I was scheduled to play field assistant to Dr. Steve Austin in Israel's Wadi Ze'elim between January 24 and February 3, I tasked my bride of 50 years with transporting my laptop, projector, projection table, DVD's, and connectors, as well as the key to the auditorium, to the February 1st meeting, and with conducting the meeting with help from Bob Schober, Tom Canfield, and others. But, alas, 5:30 A.M., February 2 in Israel, (7:30 P.M. February 1 in Santa Ana, California), I received a call from Tom Canfield asking if I knew where my wife was. I gave him Sue's phone number. He called back a few minutes later to say he couldn't reach her. (Sue carries her cell phone in her purse, and is frequently in a different room when it rings.) With no way to reach Sue, we had to cancel the meeting. When I eventually made connection with Sue, she was mortified to discover the event had completely skipped her mind! Oh, well. Like husband, like wife! I can hardly complain, having also slipped a cog so recently myself. So, to those faithful who showed up for the meeting and couldn't get in, only to be told after standing around in the cold that the meeting was canceled, WE SINCERELY APOLOGIZE. Will you please forgive us? I wish I could promise it will never happen again. But I know better than to make my boast in the flesh. With age, we become increasingly aware of the frailties of our minds and bodies - except when we are busy not being aware. (Speaking of frailties of the body, I returned from Israel with a broken rib, having fallen while climbing out of a sink-hole. Just glad it wasn't a hip!) Side Note: Sue expressed her regrets and apologies for forgetting the February 1 meeting by baking many yummy treats and bringing them to the February 15 meeting. (She said the treats were also a celebration of my February 3 birthday, nearly two weeks earlier.) If anyone was nursing a grudge against her, I'm pretty sure she won them over. Some even asked for her recipes. ![]() Gordon Wilson, Ph.D. Biology, producer of The Riot and the Dance movies, Part 1:Earth, and Part 2:Water, gave a thought-provoking and spiritually challenging lecture on the subject of his new book, "A Different Shade of Green - A biblical approach to environmentalism and the Dominion Mandate." Dr. Bernard Brandstater, 91, has received his crown. ![]() Surrounded by family, retired Anesthesiology Professor, Dr. Bernard Brandstater passed away peacefully Friday night, January 17, at Loma Linda University Hospital. He had recently received surgery to replace two infected heart valves. Pneumonia followed. Dr. Brandstater spoke to the Creation Science Fellowship of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa on several occasions, and drove many times from his home in Redlands to hear and meet our visiting guest scientists. He often hosted notable researchers in his own home, where he assembled professors and scientists from Loma Linda University to hear them and to engage in discussion. Dr. Brandstater was also a Logos Research Associate. We will miss Bernard's deep sonorous voice, graced with his pleasant Australian accent, his quick wit, and his all-consuming enthusiasm of creation science and Intelligent Design. We'll miss him for a while, that is. Reunion is certain, and Resurrection Day is coming, thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ! ![]() Heinz Lycklama, Ph.D. Nuclear Physics, gave a presentation titled, "Evolution's Showstopper." Description: All attempts by evolutionists to show that first life from non-life by natural processes can be explained by evolution have come to naught for four main reasons: 1) The Law of Biogenesis confirmed by Pasteur in 1864. 2) The failure of experiments like that of Miller in 1953 to show that life can come from non-life. 3) The mathematical probability of forming the first living cell by random chance processes is beyond possible, and 4) The information in a cell (DNA) requires an intelligent mind. The failure of the origin of first life from non-life by natural processes is actually a show stopper for evolution. Psalm 139:14, I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. ![]() We watched two movies, Lesson 3 from THE ROCKS CRY OUT series, "Science Testifies to Creation," and the Moody Institute of Science classic, "Of Books and Sloths." Science Testifies to Creation - The mechanisms of evolution cannot explain the design of life. (45 minutes). ![]() Of Books and Sloths - The sloth. Nature's champion sluggard. One of the most misunderstood animals in the world. As recent as a century and a half ago the sloth was regarded as a "blunder of nature." To capture this story, the Moody Institute of Science did research in the laboratory and in the jungles of Panama. (29 minutes). The message Of Books and Sloths points out the dependability and the accuracy of the Scriptures as compared with man's writings that must be constantly revised to correct inaccuracies. For more than fifty years, the Moody Institute of Science, a division of Moody Video, captured the magic of nature's mysteries on film while showing how the wonders of creation reveal the majesty of God. Your family, friends, church or school will enjoy these award-winning Moody Science Classic videos ! |
